2016 Primitivo - Ponzo Vineyard
The wine delivers the big fruit-forward flavors and bouquet you'd expect, but does so with elegance and a long, lean finish. Old world in style yet distinctly Californian.
Harvested much earlier then most producers would pick then let the grapes take charge: native yeast fermentation followed by 18 months neutral oak aging.
What an interesting history this varietal has! Originally from Croatia, it's believed the Romans brought it to Puglia. Then, like many things Italian, it emigrated in the mid-1800s and surfaced in California with a new name: Zinfandel.
We are fortunate to have access to a beautiful 'old-vine' block of Primitivo planted in 1952, the Ponzo family dry farms and head prunes these vines located in the Russian River AVA.
