Coco500 – where chefs go to eat in SF

In San Francisco, a city of great restaurants, Coco 500 stands at the head of the list. Not the most expensive, nor the fanciest, but the place to go for a delicious, memorable meal.

Owner Loretta Keller, who trained under the legendary Jeremiah Tower and who has earned three-star ratings for every restaurant she’s run, is a chef’s chef: the tables are filled with food people, and anyone visiting the area eats here, from the late legendary Julia Child to Mario Batali.

The menu is seasonal, with returning favorites as well as new dishes that really rock.  The deep fried green beans are a favorite, along with the Coco Molé Tacos – taco chips with molé-braised beef cheek.  And the chocolate vacherin for dessert is the definitive chocolate fudge sundae – seriously.

But to dwell on individual dishes is to disserve the whole.  It’s all about the food, and in all the years we’ve been going we’ve never had less than an outstanding meal.  Even the burger is magnificent.

Not just worth a detour – Coco 500 is worth a trip!
